I always loved steampunk genre and when I started Second Life ..it was a great surprise to all all the steampunk buzz there......

Though not a resident of Caledon myself, (I reside in the aforementioned city-state of New Babbage - now realized and currently at four sims), I frequently visit Caledon, which at this point in time, I'm sure has grown in leaps and bounds since this article. (Caledon is now a sizable continent of its own at thirty sims!) The place is vast and ideal for an intrepid explorer! Despite my many visits, there is still very much I have not seen!

While not a member of the Caledonian community it is wonderful to hear it mentioned on Brass Goggles! I visit there from time to time for a change in scenery in SL and to see what knew and refreshing things I can find! I really do look forward to visiting New Babbage.

I love Brass Goggles by the way! It inspired me to begin working on my own steampunk creations in SL. Including my first finished creation, fittingly enough, a pair of brass goggles.

Thankyou Mr Neurocam - and I'm most interested to hear of the Cavorite mine! What possibilities that must open up in the Second Life transportation line - I'll endeavour to visit when next I stumble around like the tourist I am. (I take it there's no panning for cavorite allowed? I just wondered.)

Ms Lactose, I most certainly agree with you that there are a lot of decidedly unsavoury sides to Second Life, but Caledon is as you say - worthy of flying a free flag.

(And on that note, I wish the Great Expedition to the mainland the best of luck with the natives!)

I'd been wondering when reports of Caledon would come your way, Tinkergirl- your data-filled posts are a valuable resource and an inspiration for future projects in both Second and Real Life!

in the Caledon Moors there is a rich source of Cavorite, and an extensive mine has built up around it, along with some puzzling ruins and archeological findings. Hope to see you there!

I agree, on the whole SL is bobbo. Undeniably creative, but bobbo.

Caledon, however, is a bastion of tea and cake in a sea of casinos and yiffy porn.

Ah, thank you, and we are honoured to have been mentioned on your esteemed site!

The Independent State of Caledon does have quite a community, with a wonderful daring spirit in our Modern Age. In fact, we have begun to send out explorers of our own to the rest of the Second Life grid.

There is a large, unexplored (from our vantage point) Continent, peopled with barely-dressed natives and things largely unknown to science.

Many daring adventurers have set out in hopes of returning with knowledge, and perhaps imparting a bit of Civility and Culture upon the global stage.

Not all might return; the dangers are many. But we do get reports back, and I'll share one such explorer's report of the beginning of his journey:

Peculiarly enough, I was informed of this Journal by another resident of Caledon fairly recently, and have been following it since.

I have been a member of the Steampunk community within Second Life for some time now, and was indeed one of the founder members of Caledon; alas, the corner of the island where I still mostly reside has now become just one of many, but if you ever care to visit Ordinal Enterprises I would be most delighted to welcome you. Even if I am not present, a dirigible tour begins there, and you may have noticed one of the three trams operating on the island, which I in fact scripted (though the fine design was by Messrs Shaunathan Sprocket and Reitsuki Kojima). My own Aethernet Journal details some of my personal projects, though I would not wish to promote my own poor endeavours overly.

New Babbage, I believe, is very shortly to be becoming "live" as it were, and will doubtless be a place of many marvels.

This is the first thing that has ever made me seriously consider downloading Second Life. A moment of weakness, to be sure, but still more than anything has ever done to get me into SL.

Well my goodness! Many thanks to the kind residents and visitors of Caledon for their lovely welcome and offers of tours and tea - really there's nothing nicer one could extend to me. The libraries also sound like marvelous places to visit. My name in Second Life is Mwanib Saarinen.

I am particularly interested in New Babbage, and if there's anything I can do to help you get the word out on that and appropriately Steampunk Caledon events, please do drop me a line.

I am not a resident of Caledon, but love to visit there. There is a pavilion near the Caledon Orchards with some freebie basic period clothing, if you want to get out of your jeans.

Greetings friends, I am also a resident of Caledon, actually I'm a new resident of the beautiful Caledon Mayfair (thank you Coyote Momiji). I've been in and out of SL for about 2 and a bit years but I have never felt as happy or as at home as I do now in Caledon Mayfair. It really is worth checking out (especially if your willing and able to help make it even better).

When next you are in Caledon, I pray you will make time to visit the Caledon Library, whereof one branch is located in Caledon Tamrannoch, kitty-corner from the Train Station, and another is in Caledon VictoriaCity. We have recently aquired several volumes of potential interest to Steampunks, including a collection of works on steam going back to the mid-eighteenth century, and Lady Ada Lovelace's translation and notes for Menabrea's "Sketch of the Analytical Engine."

I am a long time resident of Caledon as well. I love it - it is definitely "home" to me, in a Second Life that, as you said, appears to be filled with sex and similar things. I love Caledon, even though I don't tend to get on-line nearly as much as I used to.

I'm a longish-time member of Caledon and the designer of Caledon Mayfair. I'm really glad you enjoyed our micronation.

There's an official "pure" steampunk simulator coming up fairly soon, called New Babbage. It should be quite enjoyable.

Feel free to look me up in-world if you need anything. I've liked Brass Goggles since another Caledonian turned me onto it, and would be happy to play tour guide, time and health permitting.
