Brass Goggles - The Lighter Side of Steampunk: La Mécanique du Cœur – Novel and Album

  • Pete Martin · 2 years ago
This particular song is named "Tais-toi mon Coeur", and the French lyrics are easerly found and put through a google translate and, of course, make very little grammatical sense.

The chorus, however, is "Shut My Heart - I do not recognise you" (I think "shut" is used in both "close shut" and "shut up/silence").

the boy with the clock for a heart, will only survive if he's not overexcited by, say, love. Impossible, ofcourse, especially when confronted with the beautiful street singer (Olivia Ruiz). This song is about trying to shut/shut up his heart, for fear of dying.
    Thanks for the link!

That's incredibly evocative. Thanks for pointing it out.

    Dyonisos is great!

The gear sequence looks like a sample from Chaplin's 'Modern Times'

Love the song, and a brilliant video too! I'm downloading some more of their music right now, to see what else is good.. :)

My lord, that's gorgeous! I get a very strong Corpse Bride feel from this stylistically. It's a shame there's just the one video though, it would be awesome to see the full album narrative done in a series of videos making up a film, similar to Daft Punk's Discovery beint translated into Interstella 5555.

Former album is entitled 'Monsters in Love' and is imho better than the latest. Much more rock and dirty. They did a duo with 'The Kills' in it.

Yu can listen it at http://www.deezer.com/ type 'Monsters in love' in the search option.
Here the video of the single 'Tes lacets sont des féés' (literally: 'Your laces are fairies' does not work in english sorry):

What I also love is that scottish/french protagonists must wear white turtle-necks.

    It's the law.

Fantastic, and the beatboxing in it is done superbly. The video is gorgeous, I always liked The Corpse Bride and this is very similar to it.

This reminds me of a short story written by Philip Pullman called "Clockwork", with lovely illustrations by Peter Bailey. It's really rather good, and I'd certainly recommend it if you have yet to read it.
  • D Cunningham · 2 years ago
Oh no. that was the wrong illustrator! Correction: Leonid Gore. (oops)

Wow! What great video, and I liked the song too....Thanks Tinkergirl!

Well, I suppose it's a good thing I'll be in Paris in January... I can make sure to duck into a record store and pick up this album and book (provided I can overcome the language barrier). Given that I just finished downloading the album, I should do the honorable thing and drop some Euro on it.

I love the "Corpse Bride" vibe of the video... A Gothic clockwork fairy tale rendered in Indie Rock. Quite endearing and delightfully melancholy.

I hope the formatting goes right.

Pour moi c'est l'heure de foutre à la poubelle for me it's the moment to throw into trash
Mon cœur en bois et pour de bon, my wooden heart and once and for all
C'est le crane serti d'étincelles it's the head setting with sparks
Que je viens donner ma démission. that i've just come to give my resignation
Allez les oiseaux de mon corps, go, birds of my body
Fermez vos belles gueules à passion shut up your pretty mouth of passion
Les accidents d'amour à la pelle love accidents by the dozens
Ne m'ont pas toujours donné raison didn't always give me reason
Tais-toi mon cœur. Je ne te reconnais pas shut up my love/heart, i don't know you
Moi j’connais seulement celui qui s’emballe I only know the one who gets carried away
Je me fabrique un cœur de pierre i'm making a stone heart for me
Pour devenir un grand garçon in order to become a big boy
Celui dont tu serais fier one that you'll be proud of
Et pourrais tenir une maison and that you can own a house
un beau jour comme ca tu te leve but such a nice day like this, you awake
Avec une idée à la con with a shitty idea
Fouiller souvenirs et les rêves look into rememberings and dreams
Dans la poubelle à passion in the trash of passion
J’ai des fissures i have fissures
Dans mes chaussures in my shoes
    C’est à coups sur it's certainly
Mon cœur de pierre my stone heart
Qui me fait des tremblements de terre which is doing earthquakes
Tais-toi mon cœur stfu my heart
Tais-toi mon cœur, mon cœur c’est toi same, my heart is you
Je croyais que tu t’été tué et elle i thought you killed yourself and she
Ne se souviendras pas de toi won't remind you
D’ailleurs c’est pas la peine besides this, it's no need
De se briser comme ca to shatter like this
Tu vas encore lui faire peur you'll make him afraid again

I listened to this album... and was very disappointed considering this song is the best thing on their. The rest of it is kinda french techno pop stuff that just doesn't appeal in the states.
  • o23 · 2 years ago
Ow, I really hate that band, their songs are so stupid... But the video's great !! I just had to watch it while listenning another song XD
  • Yann · 2 years ago
Maybe you both are not smart enough to understand these songs.
  • Miss Sabine Fairweather · 2 years ago
Yann, what a terribly rude thing to say! One is permitted to express a dislike of a work of art without his intelligence, breeding, or heritage being called into question.
  • Yann · 2 years ago
Yes I'm sorry for that, but it touched my most sensitive chord!
I found that simply calling a work 'stupid' did not really pay due to the effort of the artist. At least using a more detailled explanation would have suited me perfectly. Dyonisos is all but techno, last album contains lots of lyrics and texts which appeal to poetry. Some texts read by other famous artits.

Still all my apologies Brian and 'o23', for this outgoing of me.
  • Alal · 2 years ago
I was able to get only the album Dyonisos, and yes, this was the best song on that album... but it contained other good songs. Not the bests of the world but they are good as "background music". Maybe the lyrics would even improve the songs, but my French knowledge is... hmmm let's say it's not good enough :)
  • Alal · 2 years ago
correction: the only album was the La Mécanique du Coeur

I just had to get a comment in while this item is the top post.

Freaking mesmerizing. Extremly evocative once I learnt the lyrics to the chorus. It's all perfect: The clock estetics, iconic romantic cliff landscape, the whole subject matter is awesome, peaking with our hero finally rejecting that clockwork heart he has struggled to live with all this time. I absolutely love it, and I've watched it dozens of times now. I've already nicked the concept for something of my own. Well freaking done.

And MobMentality: Absolutely, that would rock. Interstella 5555 is my favorite flick! If only the novel was available in english, though...
  • Arvid · 2 years ago
Oh, and the rythm of Je ne te reconnais pas- / Jen'te reconnai pas bloody rocks and whoever concieved it is a genius, unless this sort of thing is commonplace in french lyrics, in which case the french language deserves mad creds.

Tinkergirl disappears again. Perhaps an airship whisked her away to a place of gears and goggles. Me hopes all is well with her, as always, but hopes she returns with haste.
  • Brian Ghewette · 2 years ago
Listened to this album again, but once again I just couldn't find the ukulele infused pop/ alternative rock appealing. I still love this song its sadly the most consistent song on the album although I liked a few others none of them seem very appealing to U.S. listeners (I'm not talking about mainstream listeners either). This is some of their better work, considering their earlier albums which I'm not sure if I liked more or less. However, I will also add and ask: What exactly is the music scene in France right now? If someone could honestly tell me, that would be amazing.

Basically, Tais Toi means 'shut up'.
Hence, he is telling his heart to be quiet. (or shut up)
After he says tais toi mon coeur the female adds in "I do not recognize you". Thats basically the chorus of the song.

Some of the lyrics get lost in translation, but I'll try my best to help!

The first part (lyrics before the chorus) is basically him giving up and teling the "birds of his heart to give flight".

The second part (after the first chorus) is a little harder to translate. He is singing about having a heart of stone to become a bigger boy so that she would be proud. He then goes on to sing:
"But on a fine day like this
You wake up with a stupid idea
    Digging up dreams and memories
    In the trash to passion."

The third part (after the second chorus) translates as:
    "I have cracks
    In my shoes
That knock upon my heart of stone
    Causing earthquakes."

Im pretty sure this is how the song translates, but there may be some errors as I am only in my fourth year of french. But I really hope I helped!

I think I'm going to have to track down this album and I'd love to read the book but my French is more than little weak...do you think they would ever dare to translate it to English? Not to be a jerk...or anything but It would be Shiny if they would...

Every sensible man can identify himself in this video; he just want to stop the voice in his heart because love only lead to deception. I know it's sad. So he try to turn it into stone so he can stop the pain. Here in Quebec, most of the population understand both french and english; it's a unique vision of the world that we're so lucky to have. Real love is almost impossible i think, "they" want us to believe in that concept to sell us stuff like chocolate and flowers, i know that you wish i am wrong but look deeply inside of you like that guy and listnen...thank's for reading me

La Mecanique du Coeur has been optioned for full-length animation by Luc Besson's production company. The book is currently being translated into English and will be published in the UK and the US as THE BOY WITH THE CUCKOO-CLOCK HEART in 2009.

Amazing album. It isn't just in French though. There are a few English songs and I do believe one Spanish song on there as well.

This is a gorgeous story. I've read the original book and have listened to album. 'Tais toi mon coeur' is truthfully one of my most favorite songs.

I'd like to inform all people of curiousity living outside of France that there is an English version of the book in the UK, existing under the title of "the boy with the cuckoo clock heart". An American version is going to come out in March of 2010.

Here is a picture of the beautiful English cover: http://img1.fantasticfiction.co.uk/images/n61/n...

The cover art was by the French artist Benjamin Lacombe, an extremely talented man who lives in Paris.
