Brass Goggles - The Lighter Side of Steampunk: The Edison – Club Review

  • Zoetica · 2 years ago
I have been summoned by Nadya to join her in her next Edison adventure, and am very much looking forward to it, especially after this review.

Perhaps through enough style and strength in numbers we’ll be able to give this wonderful place a less…douchebagy audience! At least for a time.

    [pardon the double post]

Tinkergirl, thank you for posting my review. Everyone, apologies for the bad grammar and run-on sententeces. I was at work while I wrote this up and had to be quick.

Oh my god, apparently I can't even spell right in a 3-sentence comment. I am so ashamed!
  • Tinkergirl · 2 years ago
I can fix the spelling mistakes if you'd prefer, Ms Lev?

I look forward to hear what happens on your next Edisonic Adventure - perhaps it can be reclaimed, or at the very least, you can show them how it should be done. Dressing to the occasion is a fading art, it seems.

What were the prices like? Their menu lists none, and that worries me. Is it one of those "If you have to ask, you can't afford it" situations? Also, how were the drinks / eats? Is it worth a two hour drive? :)

I know I shouldn't but I cannot help it - And0, thank you. You are my thousandth comment on Brass Goggles, which makes me smile greatly. No prize, I'm afraid though - just my thanks to you and all other commenters.

When I called them on the phone, they said that the average item on the menu was $11. Cheap! By the time we got there, there was no more food. I chatted with one of the bartenders and he said that they don't have their own kitchen yet, but plan to have one soon. Right now they get their food from a local restaurant. They stop serving food at 7. And they close at 2 AM.

It's worth a 2 hour drive if you combine it with other activities downtown, like shopping in those little markets, Little Tokyo, that type of stuff. Can't tell you anything about the drinks, we didn't drink there because our main objective that night was food.

So, food is cheap, admission is free, which may be promotional until they get their own kitchen and really get things up and running.

Tinker, it is my honor and my pleasure. This is the only RSS feed in which I read *every* post.

Nadya, great, thanks for all the info. I'm in Santa Barbara, but the next weekend I have free, I'll definitely make the trip (and crash at a friend's house!)

This reminds me of the Virtual World game place that BG mentioned a few weeks back. I think I still have a poster from them. LA is the place to be for steampunk themes!

    Thanks for the write-up, Nadya!

Some related links from the intarweb...
obligatory 2nd St tunnel shot and an older exterior shot (credit goes to Martin of www.you-are-here.com, great photos in there!). For those interested in the environs, USC geography dept has a good USC walking tour overview of downtown. And of course, you could even live above The Edison.

Nadya, I'm glad you mentioned the outside. This "new history" kick LA developers are on has some warts.

Hey, was there an animatronic band playing away in there? :D

Perhaps a chat to one of the owners might be worthwhile too see what reaction you guys get about the future plans of the place.

It is hard to find... But they have a website - not much of a gallery, but it is something. http://www.edisondowntown.com/

    *reads their menu*
What a displeasing array of offerings. And if they are charging eleven dollars for three devilled eggs, then the portion sizes of their other dishes will likely be sadly disappointing as well, especially to gentlemen of appetites.
If I could abide Los Angelese, I would want very much to go down there and work in their hopefully-soon-to-be-opened kitchen, with an eye towards introducing more thematic cuisine. (Alas, I cannot abide LA, and will stay in Seattle. I find it much more suited to my temperament.)
Hmmm. It does cause me to think about the possibilities of steampunk food, however. I wonder what sort of dinner party I could put together, and how many of my friends would be interested in attending such a thing. . . .
  • Tinkergirl · 2 years ago
Ms Rebecca - it's always been bubbling away at the back of my mind, what you would serve at a Steampunk dinner party - or indeed, what might be served at the captains table of an aethership to Mars, or what supplies you'd take on a airship to lands that time forgot.
That, coupled with the fact that I've always wanted to host a dinner party of some kind, just never had the right guests to do so. *sighs*
I'd be very interested to hear any ideas for menus, etc. you consider.

I have a strange fascination for making sculptural food (known to the Midaevals as "subtlety"), so some of the images dancing in my head are very strange. I'll be sure to let you know about anything I might plot. And should the Steampunk Dinner Party ever happen, I'll provide you with a link to the pictures.

Oh! And my recent fascination with bentos was entirely inspired by your cog bento, which I found a link to from Kaja Foglio's LJ some time ago. Thank you!

For my third comment in a row: Some Musings on Steampunk Food, and an Initial Attempt at a Menu
This will require more work, but there are my initial ideas.
Yes, I am obsessed with cuisine.
